Walnut Jewelry Case

I made two of these walnut jewelry cases and gave them away as Christmas presents—one each to my daughter and daughter-in-law. The design isn’t original—I pretty closely followed a design I found in Wood magazine (July-2009) with only a few minor modifications. It’s nearlly all 1/2” walnut—resawed from thicker stock—and uses simple rabbet & dado joinery. This was one of the most ambitious projects I’ve tried so far—and one of the main reasons I upgraded my table saw—the old one just wasn’t cutting it anymore. (Wow! I can’t believe I actually said that.) I was pretty pleased with how they both turned out—and their recipients were happy with them also.

That’s one impessive case! The door is spectacular and the finish looks great. What did you use as a finish?

Thanks for the kind words Wiggs. I used about 4 coats of thinned-out satin polyurethane, sanding with 320 grit sandpaper between coats. After the final coat, I rubbed it with 0000 steel wool and applied a coat of paste wax.

Nice looking jewelry boxes there. Looks kind of like the one that was made for my wife last year for mothers day. :)
