My wife and I never really liked the mantel above our fireplace, so about 6 months ago I built this mantel out of red oak. My wife wanted something simple—so I made it simple. The biggest challenge was fitting the edges around the stones.

Looks great I built a mantel is well but used a Cedar Log I bought from a farmer in North Dakota.

Looks great with the stonework.

Very nice work. I have plans to build something like that this year to replace our mantel. What method / technique did you use to fit the edge around the stone?

Thanks for the compliment TxBudMan. I used a contour guage on the stone and transfered that curve to the wood. It was a bit tedious since I cut it by hand and used a round rasp and round file to “fine tune” the fit—lots of trial fitting before I permanently attached it.
