This is an easel made from poplar that I did for my soon to be mother-in-law as a holiday gift. I used poplar because it was economical and I hadn’t yet found the local hardwood lumber yard. It’s the first project that I took my time doing, and I think it turned out pretty good. I learned that exposed doweling is better left to a drill press rather than a freehand drill, if you want a good tight fit. I also learned that Danish oil is a wonderful finish.

Nice job, looks good and I’m sure she is happy. I am finding more uses for poplar myself. I think it is an overlooked wood a lot of times.

Nice looking easel. I agree with Howie that poplar is overlooked far to often. Takes paint and stain well, is cheap, and you can make it look like mahogany.
Have your say...
