This jewellery box is made of recycled cherry and bird’s eye maple. Yes, recycled cherry! I bought a severely damaged piano last year that was made of cherry simply for the wood. I always wanted to make a jewellery from the wood and when a client of mine requested a jewellery box as a gift for his mother at christmas my heart skipped a beat and the thoughts of this cherry piano began to flutter.
This was a fun build and I incorporated some new challenges in it for myself. My client asked that there be a diamond on the top and inside the top of the box as well. I could have inlaid the diamonds but decided to make the top out of multiple miters and gluing them all back together to accentuate the grain direction of the woods and give an inlaid look though it is all solid wood. My client was just ecstatic when they saw the box and I got the report that at christmas when the mother opened the gift there were tears of joy.
This just reminds me of why I do woodworking. When I have clients that are that happy and come back for more time and time again…......just makes me want to do that much more. I speak for myself but am sure many feel this way…when I have completed a project I quite often see the ways I could have improved the project or maybe better the project as opposed to taking a step back “smelling the roses” and see the project as a beautiful piece that you have crafted and the joy others get from seeing and using the piece.

I like the mitered design and the fact that it’s new life for some nice wood. Good show!

Biff, I just love small wooden boxes. It looks like this contest is going to be a real treat for my eyes. Cherry is not a readily available wood in Australia, so re-cycled Cherry is most unlikely.
Well done, and best wishes on your entry.

Beautiful box, you must hate to part with things like this, but you have the picture for memories.
I’ve just been going through the entries.
For me, it’s going to be real hard to pick from all these amazing creations.
It would be much easier, if we threw them all in a hat, & drew the winner.

Hi Kevin,
I am not sure how I managed to miss this when you first posted it but I am glad it came back up on my list.
This is a gorgeous box. Maple and cherry are a favorite combination of mine. Thanks for the post and the story behind it. I have often said that I believe the story is just as important as the project.
Thanks for the post.
