DESIGN. I designed this campaign chest as a gift for one of my grandsons, as a toy box for now and a bedroom chest for when he grows up.

MATERIALS. It’s made of maple veneer core plywood, edged in 1/4” maple and with the four legs in solid maple to make it more durable. There’s a pair of soft-close lid supports to ensure the lid won’t come crashing down on his head and solid brass handles and strapping to give it that campaign chest look. The corner protectors at the top are brass plated, as are the hinges, because I couldn’t find a supplier for solid brass ones of these in Campaign style. If anyoje is aware of a supplier for these in solid brass I’d be interested in hearing of them.

FINISH. The finish is a water-based stain, top coated with several coats of Minwax varathane I thinned out to apply with a rag. I then applied a few coats of beeswax which I hand-polished.

That is a big chest, looks great. I like the color. Would like to see some pics inside as well. Nice work.

Wonderful piece Marty. The details are great. Beautiful.
