Our two cats were tearing up the door jambs on the far end of the house from their current “cat tree” and scratcher so I went to the garage and put this together from scraps. The only thing I had to buy was the sisal rope for $5, so it was certainly cheaper than a store bought one that would have cost $40-80.
MDF base with cedar 2×4 cut-offs doubled up for the post. I used a left over carpet scrap from something and spray adhesive to cover the bottom half and base and wrapped the top with the sisal rope held in place with hot glue. I finished it off by trimming the base edge with a scrap piece of cedar 1×2.
I figured using cedar at least it would smell nice when they scratched it apart!
It took a minute to get them to scratch up on it, but a little catnip rubbed in to the carpet and rope fixed that. It’s been sitting in our bedroom corner for the past week or so and we haven’t had any more door jambs getting shredded, so success!
