Hi All, Glad to be back in the shop again. I’ve been in Colorado for the past 6 days doing the Christmas with family thing. This box was for my nephew. He was a Special forces guy who served all over the Globe in harms way. I made this box for him to keep items that he has collected over the years that are not meant for every day viewing. It was quite well received and will be placed on a rug he was given by the President of Iraq for his Liaison work. I can’t wait to see it :)

The leopard wood was quite the challenge. It is quite dense and mills nice. My problems came from trying to fill the gullets in the soft grain and getting rid of the darn splinters. I sanded this thing at least four times, once after every milling operation and still got splinters. I made a crosscut sled for the TS to cut the 45’s. Not much else to say other than it was a labor of love and he was really happy to have it.

I believe I’ve heard it called lacewood. A great job. Congratulations on the completion.

There is a lot of confusion about what exactly the wood is called.
Leopard wood, Lace wood, Silky Oak…

This site pretty much clears it up, or maybe confuses the matter even more:

What sort of thing would a special forces guy collect that isn’t for every day viewing. Roman soldiers used to bring home body parts. Specifically certain unpaired external anatomy, not the nose. Oh, it’s a great looking box!

What a great box….Tom “you do not want to know the answer to that”....LOL Very classy box for a special person who has dedicated their life to keeping us safe. Great gift for someone who greatly deserves it.

I’ve never seen anything with such a large surface area of Leopard wood before. It is gorgeous in that scale! Nice details.

Very nice piece, and as Blake noted, on a much larger scale than most pieces I have seen in that wood. Doesn’t overwhelm, though.

Thanks, Gary for the link.

Beaut job Doug. I like the grain of the Leopard wood, it really adds character to the job.

Great looking box. What are the dimensions? Glad to have your nephew serving, doing things for his Country that most would not have the nerve to do. My Nephew was a Navy Seal many years ago, and though he never talks about his assignments – my Sister used to say he would simply go away for periods and when he returned he never spoke of where he had been, or what he had had to do. One can only imagine. Those guys are a special breed – Thank God we have them.

Beautiful work, a timeless classic that is not “Overworked” or over embellished. This is a perfect textbook example of where “Less is more”. Absolutely gorgeous craftsmanship and attention to detail sets this heirloom ahead, above and far apart from the pack.
