Picture frame for Mom

This is a Christmas present I whipped together quickly for my mother and step father. I had a great deal of trouble gluing the crown molding together because of the angles. I ended up making an odd jig with some scrap and clamps. In the end it worked out pretty well.

There are a number of mistakes that I was not very happy about but I didn’t have the time or material to fix them. The biggest one is that the eggs were not cut correctly so the pattern does not wrap around the frame correctly. My mother didn’t seam to notice and she was happy so I guess that’s what matters.

It was my first time making a frame out of crown molding and I would definitely do a few things differently next time.

Nice job on the frame, Dan. Can you tell us a little about the finish?

@BrandonW – The finish is actually a patina finish kit that I found at a craft store. It comes with two layers. The first layer is a bronze color with actual metal flakes in the paint. The second layer is chemical solution that causes the bronze to turn green. After that was done I used some matte acrylic spray to seal the patina.

The two step Patina solution is made by Triangle crafts and is called “Sophisticated Finishes” it actually turned out much better than I expected. If you go with this finish I would definitely recommend reading the instructions. I over did the chemical solution and it turned out a little too green for my tastes.
