Built-In Library

I had always wanted to have a built-in library in our family room and last summer I decided to take the money and “Just Do IT” as Nike would say. Since we had just installed a new figured hickory floor using 5” solid hickory the previous fall, we thought that any type wood that we used for the library would somehow match some of the figure in the flooring.

We decided on using quarter sawn white oak for the project, dying the wood orange and then using dark walnut stain over the orange tint to “pop” the flecks in the wood. We are very satisfied with the results. A couple of the pictures are prior to final assembly of the upper and lower halves. There is much to show and tell about the process along the way and for those of you who might be interested in following along with the build process, you can read the whole article on my website at:

We couldn’t be more happy with this new piece of furniture. We like it so well that I built a new wide screen TV stand to match the library which we use on the opposite end of our new family room. That post has been made to my projects as well.

Dave, this is a gorgeous addition to your home that, with the new floor, dramatically transformed the appearance of the room. This was well worth the cost and effort that you put into this project. And I am sure that even with your son-in-law’s help this was still a struggle to get the cabinets installed. Your finish looks good as well. It compliments the floor well.

You did a fine job there – your design? It works in the space, well done.

That is a beautiful piece of furniture. I love the color and never would have thought of the two step process.
