Here’s a box I’m working on for the State fair in Feb 08. It’s morstly Bird’s eye maple, but will have additional woods inlaid. I added a few sketch’s to help visualize how it will look in the end. It’s really kind of hard to tell right now ….all boxy looking..
The main character of the box will be it’s curving sides. It will have curves top to bottom AND side to side, including the lid. The inlaid you see on the inside, will be revealed and actually inlaid detail on the outside once I cut the curves.
There will be burl on the inside of the lid. Anyway, here are a few pics.

Wow, Bill, I can’t wait to see the completed project. You are the finest box make that I know – it will be well worth waiting for, but then as I just love small wooden boxes, I could say that about most.

Bill, I’ve frequently looked at the other two state-fair boxes. Nice of you to give a glimpse of the built for the ‘08 entry. Like the rest of us, I look forward to your next entry.

All,
Thank you so much for the kind remarks. A lot of you have inspired me with your work and especially my good friend Don accross the pond. I’m getting close to cutting the curves and I can’t tell you how stressed I am about it. One side is 13.5 inches so the band saw is out. And with the compound cuts it kind of helps to tape the cutoffs back on. So it will be an interesting evening trying to figure out the safest, accurate and feasible way to do it.
Next pictures coming soon. I’ll just paste them in this thread.

Hope your going to give us details of how you manage cutting the curved sides.
I’m planning to make a curvy box some time in the future – any tips you feel like giving will be much appreciated.
