For my second attempt at a chessboard, I used 3/4” solid cedar salvaged from the master bedroom closet demolition that my wife and I completed this summer. The squares are 1.75” x 1.75” and cut from long strips (allow 2-3” more than you estimate), glued together, then squared at edge and ripped into 1.75” strips, inverted every other strip, and glued again, with 1/2” border mitered around the completed board. I found the pieces online for an unreasonably reasonable price.
