This was my grandson’s Christmas present and my first project. The wood is Cherry with shellac finish and the design is similar to one I found on the web. This was my first mortise and tennon joinery and resawing and, with a little finessing, it actually came out square. :D

Nice project iSaw. I bet it was fun making that curved top. Your grandson should put this to good use for years to come. Happy New Year.

Wow is right! What an excellent box. Almost looks too good for just a toy box :>) I’m very sure even he grows out of toys that this toy box will grow into something else as well. Heirloom project and very pretty one at that. Well done.

Very, very nice. Does that device hold the top up securely enough that no little fingers can get injured?

When I see something that beautiful and someone says it is their first project, I start to feel a little queasy. <g>

Nice job!

Well done. Great lid, like a steamer trunk.

Thanks guys and gals. You guessed it, rikkor. The hardware on the center of the lid is a devise that keeps constant pressure on the lid in any position to keep it from slamming.

Nice chest, iSaw! I really like the design. I have to favorite this one as I may end up making something similar in the very near future. I love the curved top. Do you care to make any comments on it’s construction? What bevel angle did you use to cut the pieces? It turned out great!

Great looking piece. I never would have guessed it was your first project. How long did it take you to build?

The top radius was just done by eye. In fact, the whole thing was done by eye. I first built a prototype out of pine and decided to change the proportions somewhat making the radius bigger (flatter) and shortening the overall height.

The panels are resawn to 1/8” thick. Tricky but fun to do. The bottom is two layers of 1/8” pressboard. That’s the thickness I had on hand and it was a little light-duty so I laminated two layers. Hinges are drawn brass.
