December, 2010—My 16 year old daughter asked me if I would help her make a band saw box. Of course I would! First we glued up a piece of hardwood between two pieces of pine. Then she traced out the box she wanted to make, no doubt inspired by the Ventura book that I have. Then it was over to the band saw to make some saw dust. She made every cut herself.

Then she sanded it and sprayed on some clear lacquer. Daddy put on the knob and lined the drawer with felt. My daughter signed the bottom. We put it on display in the house. I am proud of her for making this, and she is also glad she did it. She said she had fun!

Good for both of you. I just helped my neice and nephew 14 & 12 make their 1st pens. It was a lot of fun for me. I can’t wait till my 2 girls are old enough.

Good work, Art’s Daughter.

Dad and daughter must have had a good time working on this. It’s a nice looking box. I’d be proud to give it as a gift.

Happy Holidays.

She did a fine job on this one, I really like how the pine pieces are book matched to reverse the grain. It gives such a cool affect. :)

Yeah- another generation welcomed to make some band saw boxes. I have taught quite a few people how to design and make these creative boxes, both here in my shop in Texas and traveling to different locations around the country, and every time I’m impressed with how good a job even a beginning woodworker can do- and how much satisfaction they get out of designing it themselves. It adds another degree of satisfaction to know that it is your very own design- or at least design variation.
Good to see youngsters interested in woodworking.
