This is a desk set I created as a Christmas gift for my sister-in-law. It includes a clock, post-it and pen holder, and a business card holder. The primary material is walnut and the accent wood is mahogany. The card holder was made using power tools, however the clock and post-it holder were done almost entirely by hand. I used a drill to make the holes and pegs, and to mill out the recess for the clock movement. The rest (and it really seemed like a lot at the time) was done with hand tools.

The box is almost another story. I wanted to make a gift box for the set, but I also wanted to use my new CNC Machine. And since the newly built machine was taking up valuable real estate on my table saw, I didn’t really have a way to cut out the pieces for the box. So, I wrote a program for the CNC machine to cut out all the pieces, and also to carve my CNC logo onto the box lid. The result was a totally custom gift box that fits the set perfectly. I used the shavings from the hand planing process as packing material to protect the clock hands and for a neat effect.

What a lovely gift, and great display of craftsmanship. That’s a job well done.
