I have been making boxes recently and my 6 year old son has been messing around in the shop while i was working.

he surface planed a pine board to his liking then he wanted to make a box from it. I measured out the board and he marked out all the lines. he even made the cuts for the side pieces. I cut out the bottom which is hardboard and was giving him quite a bit of trouble. I pre-drilled the hardboard for the nails too. he nailed everything together and even came up with the garage door plan. oh, and as with most of my projects this was done with all hand tools.

he surface planed the board over a couple of days. the cutting and assembly took about 30 minutes. once done he turns to me and asks, why does it take so long for you to make your boxes?

Yes BD, why does it take so long? :) You must be proud of him. Reminds me of a project I have bookmarked in the hopes my son and I may do it one day:

A great project by a great woodworker of the future. Hope he continues to grow his woodworking interest. My first wood project as a young boy sticks proudly in my mind…and that was over 50 years ago.

I hope he signs and dates it. And I hope Dad makes sure he keeps it.
After my mom died recently, I found a cutting board that I made for her when I was in seventh grade wood shop. I’m glad I have it.
