This was a much needed item in our house that was also inspired by other LJ posts. I added my own twist by going two wide at each level expanding the capacity to 12 (14 if I clearance the base so bottles fit there!)Originally I had planed to mount it directly to the wall however I did not consider how the bottles might fit in the back holes when it was mounted, as a matter of fact they would not have fit so a base was needed to make it a freestanding rack. It balanced pretty well with no base but I didn’t want to take the chance in the long run!

It is made out of American Walnut 1.75” x 5.5” x 30”, holes are spaced @ about 3 3/4” on center vertically and 2 3/4”horizontally. if the piece had been 6.5” wide than mounting on the wall would have been possible completely. Holes are drilled at 15 degrees although my cheap drill guide from harbor freight slipped out of position a couple of times without me noticing and did some straight holes or between 0-15 degrees. I handplaned this piece from rough cuts from the mill and it turned out beautifully, my first planing experience! Holes are drilled at 1 1/4” although 1 3/8”might have been better seeing as some of the pinot noir bottles we have tried just barely don’t fit :-(.

The project was completed just in time, the next day our first shipment arrived from Nickel and Nickel in Napa and imediately found their way to their new home to await consumption!

Hope you enjoy I know i will!
