Recipe Box Christmas Present

Made this recipe box for our son’s girlfriend as a Christmas present. I made the box and my wife will be putting in our son’s favorite recipes. It is made of old growth fir and chechen. This is the first time I have worked with chechen which I understand is a Mexican hardwood. I designed it after a ‘lunchpail’ recipe box that my wife has but I think it came out looking a little more like a treasure chest….oh well, I guess either reference works.

This is a neat box, how did you make the top?

1SgtBob, I used 3/16 fir plywood. I cut 45 degree ‘dados’ on the back side every 1/2 inch; then soaked it in water, bent it to form and let it dry. I cut the 3/16” dados in the top sides while still in standard dimension using a circle jig with my router; then cut the corresponding final shape on my bandsaw. I used the cutoff and the sides as the press when I formed the plywood top. Hope that makes sense. It’s the first time I ever tried to bend wood and I am sure there are probably better ways to do it.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. Like every project, it seems, there are things I would differently if I were to do it again. Ah, the joy of learning.

Merry Christmas!
