Black Walnut with Bubinga accents
I got the idea for this bed from a photo of a tatami bed. The legs and the rails fit together without hardware, kind of like on of those wood puzzles. It is a combination of cross-lap and bridle joints.

Very pretty, love the joinery. I’ve always liked this style…unfortunately as clumsy as I am I’d probably bang my feet every time I got into bed…lol You did a great job looks awesome.

The joinery is what catches the eye (and my shins), very nice design and implementation!

I like how low and grounded the bed looks. The joinery is outstanding, too. It give s simple form more complexity. Good job!

Brian, nice looking platform. I assume this joinery locks when joined but knocks apart for break down? No fasteners or glue? Or am I reading too much into it? Do you have any pictures of the joint apart?

I must admit, I have hit my shin once or twice. :-))
Yes, the joints easily break down. Once the mattress and platform are lifted out, the head/foot rails slide up and out, followed by the side rails. I will try to get some pics.

Several people have expressed an interest in the leg joinery, so I made some quick drawings to illustrate the general idea. Note, that were I to make this bed again, I would consider making the legs from 7 pieces instead of 3, to save having to form the bridal joints.

Hi Brian,
Very cool. I really like the knocked-off edges that help show off the joinery.
I’ll have to use that on my next Japanese project.
