I have been trying my hand at a bit of piercing with mixed results. I took the return lip down to about 1mm thick and pierced it, came out next morning to finish of and it had spilt, CA’ed up real good so I finished it of just for the exercise. It’s a piece of NZ Kauri,(real dry old demolition stuff) measures about 7’’ x 3 1/2” finished with spray on schelac rubed back and polished

Very nice turning and “piercing”. I like the design and would also like to know how you did it.

Keep it up.

I Like!!

I picked up a pneumatic turbine and some burs (think dentist drill), this summer from Craft Supplies? (I don’t remember the vendor off-hand).

I haven’t set up a vacuum vent to the outside to suck up all the smoke yet. And there was a LOT of smoke when I tried it in the shop the first time!

Some of the folks in the local turning club have done some piercing demos and shown some pieces that are fantastic.

Neat piece, Pete. I haven’t been brave enough to carve or pierce any of my turnings. May have to give it a shot.

Sweet. What is piercing exactly?

Yes it is a nice looking piece. Sorry to hear of your problems with cracking…. but you pulled it off anyway. I have yet to try piercing….. but you do inspire me.

The shape of this bowl I find very appealing…. I especially like the foot…adds a real look of elegance…

Well done.

Very nice Pete. It has to be scary to put hours and hours into a piece and then subject it to an unfamiliar technique. Very commendable just to try and I think your first results came out great.

Looks great.
The piercing lightens it up.
