Here is a walnut and maple recipe box that I just completed for my wifes birthday. I wanted to do something a little different so this is what I came up with. The lines on the sides were made with an awl and then I sanded each one smooth. I engraved the letters with a Dremel. It was the fist time I used one and I think they came out okay.

I like it. The book design works well and I almost thought the lines were natural grained wood, they look so real. As for the mistake, I didn’t notice it untill you pointed it out. I think you should leave it be. By the way I like how you took the picture using the red sheet in the background…I will have to try this on my pictures.

As for the lettering, was it hard to do? Did you do a lot of practicing before you attempted the final lettering? I am building a wedding chest and I would like to engrave it, but I don’t want to mess it up.

Hey Richard. The lettering wasn’t too bad to do. I printed a font that I liked and temporarily glued it to the wood with spray adhesive. I essentially just traced the letters with the dremel. I did practice a little before I did the final one. I found that the smaller the bit the better. As far as leaving the mistake, I think it will bother me every time I see it so I have to fix it.

Very nice. You must have had “pies” on the brain when you lettered it. I would not have noticed if had not said it. Looks great! That is a unique design with the book look.

Thanks for sharing!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s a good looking box. We have a bible that’s been in the family for several generations. Your idea gives me an idea on making a box for it. :-) Also, great job on the lettering. Just last night I tried to use my dremel to engrave my sons name on a toy I built. Failed miserably LOL. I think I need to practice a lil more on some scrap. Again, great work.
