Finally got back behind the lathe over the past few weeks to get some Christmas gifts started.
The first present I completed is is a bowl I turned for my mother in law from Ambrosia Maple. The bowl is approximately 6.5” in diameter and nearly 3” tall.
Finish is spray laquer.
I was going for a simple shape to begin with, but had a catch near the upper lip, hence the design change and detail around the rim. While not exactly what I had in mind, I am pleased with how it turned out.
This piece of wood was full of some nice figure and the brown staining typical of ambrosia maple… ...even had some streaks of pink although I don’t think that the pictures pick it up.
Thanks for looking, comments are always welcome!

Hey Joe, very nice piece of timber, pleased to see you are a flexible turner, sometimes (in fact a lot of times) that wood will just lead you a merry dance & you have go with the flow.
You did well with this piece, nice job

Jay, I really like the shape and size of this bowl. Ambrosia Maple is one of my favorites types of wood, the grain on this project is outstanding!
Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks guys…
Pete – well put – about dancing and flexibility – I think that has been true in most of my turnings. It is interesting sometimes to see how far from the initial concept the final piece becomes.
Chuck – I’m with you on the Ambrosia Maple – I have one other blank (a little bigger than this one) and can’t wait to turn it. Hopefully it will have some interesting grain like piece did.

I agree with Pete about the dancing. You have one shape in your mind but when the project is finished it looks totally different than what you had in mind. Ambrosia Maple has to be my favorite species of wood. I just got a blank of it and even being a small 4×2” blank it has some great looking character. Got it rough turned and cant wait to see the final result. Great piece you have there and hope to see the other piece of that maple you have in your shop on here soon.
