This is my first round of woodworking gifts for the holidays. I’ve mainly just worked with maple, so it was fun to pick a couple contrasting woods and play with different widths for the cutting boards and candle holders. Lots of inspiration from other LJ posts, but mainly just trial and error to find patterns I liked.

The main woods are walnut, maple, cherry, oak and canary wood. I also added bloodwood to a couple candle holders which I had from a previous project. A lot of work on the tablesaw and nearly all finishing was done with hand planes. The cherry had a decent amount of tear out, even when I avoided the center line since the grain direction was switched for the pattern. I used my orbital sander on the cherry board, but mainly just hand planes, a cabinet scraper and very light sanding for the other pieces.

Now the easy part…giving them away! Thanks for looking.

Nice collection of gifts. I like the bookmatched board… nice touch.

I’m sure they’ll be well received.

And wow, you’re already done! I’m still feverishly working away on mine.

They look great. I like the bases of the candle holders, I have mostly just seen square. Great use of woods.

NICE MIX OF GIFTS, LAST YEAR WHEN I TRIED THIS AT THE LAST MINUTE, I CUT THE TIP OFF MY RIGHT RING FINGER. THINK SAFETY FIRST, DON’T HURRY LIKE I DID. NICE WORK.
