Civil War Pen for Christmas

When I spotted the new Civil War Pen in the new Penn State Industries catalog, I knew immediately what I was making my brother in law for Christmas. He’s a Civil War buff, lives near some battlefields in Virginia, and has found some war era bullets with his metal detector. It was a natural fit.

I selected a gun-metal kit and found a piece of nicely figured wood. The blank started out a very rich brown tone, it turned slightly yellow and oak-y with great rust and gray spalting in the grain. It looks a lot like a weathered rifle stock.

The wood turned easily and finished nicely with several coats of HUT bar wax, Crystal Coat, then Renaissance Wax for a finger proof finish.

He’s taking a job overseas, so the family will be away for a few years with only limited opportunity to come back for visits. I figure that this pen is a nice reminder of his home in Virginia while they are away.

Turned out nicely and I’m looking forward to giving it to him this holiday.

Happy Holidays to all Lumberjocks, no matter where they are this season.

Nice work! Love the “weathered” look. Great historical connection. Let me know when you begin taking orders in the new year – seriously. Best wishes for the holidays.

Perfect description. I am here in VA and reside near such battlefields, I am sure he will love it
