A while back I bought these downdraft panels from Rockler, in an ongoing attempt to beat wood dust out of my workshop and my lungs. All in all I’m pretty happy with this setup, it pretty much works as designed.
I have it set up with the small Rockler portable dust collector and it works great. A bigger unit would probably work even better, but the small one does a good job of generating down-draft and sucking most of the fine dust down and out of the air.
More on the build process and detailed review on my blog.

The Rockler downdraft panels do a good job of eliminating dust. I also bought some a while back and converted an old drafting table into a downdraft table. I am again redesigning the downdraft table to improve its use…adding T track so I can use sliding clamps to haod smaller pieces at angles.
I should have done this long ago

I built one of these a few years ago and it has served me well.
I like your addition of the blank panels. I attach mine to a larger DC, so it might not be as important. But, I still might give it a try.
