Mantel for fireplace

Recently completed this for a friend. They have a mission style bungalow home. The bookcases were already in place beside the fireplace. They wanted the mantel to tie it together and hide some of the weirdness of the fireplace. I built a cardboard model first as it was very confusing to work around all the stairstepped brick to make it fit. Still had to do a lot of fiddling on site to make it all work, but they are very pleased.

When the owner finishes stripping the side cabinets and doors it will all be stained a dark walnut.

I made it from birch to match the cabinets. You normally think oak when you think mission, but needed to work with what was there as well.

Kevin, if ever I saw a fireplace begging for a mantle this is it. The mantle really dresses up the appearance of the brick and I am sure working with this fireplace design was a challenge. Once the mantle and bookcases are finished the room will look 100% better.

Thanks Scott. I am looking forward to seeing it all stained and the doors on the cabinets. It will provide a lot of nice contrast then.
