The window seating area had been a bit of an eyesore for quite some time, so we elected to renovate it. The first photo show everything completed with the exception of the drawer handles in place and baseboard molding at each end in place. It’s unfortunate I didn’t have a “before” shot, however the second photo depicts the project underway. The framing was simply 2X3 screwed into place, followed by 1/2” plywood on each side of the drawer cavity. The inexpensive 3/4 extension drawer slides function quite well, with reasonable access to the drawers. The handles lend a contemporary touch to the piece.

Neat. I am about to try something similar and am just beginning to think about what a bench will need to support someone’s weight.

I should have mentioned that the top of the bench has 1/2” plywood overlaying the 2X3 framing. The 2X3 framing goes around the entire perimeter, and there are 3 front to back 2X3’s: one in the centre and one on each side of the drawer cavity, attached to the vertical 1/2” plywood pieces on either side of the drawers.

Hope that clarifies the support question, “Spunwood”.
