In the new house we had a nice den, but no desk to fit it, so I banged this out in a weekend until I have time to do something nicer. With lots of projects on hand, I wanted to keep this one simple:
—A single sheet of birch ply, cut like puzzle pieces to create two halves of the desk (yes, that’s almost exactly 32 square feet of desk. Scale of the photo is hard to judge, but that’s “the big iMac” and there is actually a whole other 24” monitor hiding to the very left side of the desk. It’s big.)
—Edge veneer glued on.
—Black paint with a topcoat. There is just barely some grain poking through.
—It’s all custom fit around the window-sills, with a tiny gap for wires to run through (gap so so small, you don’t see it against the black top.
—I bought the legs from Ikea. They bolt to a frame under the desk (also Ikea). Quick and easy!
I forgot that my kids would be using this. They are already starting to kill the veneer edging. Oh well… someday I’ll do a hardwood version.
