My attempt at a Contemporary Clock

As my son suggested that my Acme Bomb Clock – http://lumberjocks.com/projects/392529 – would be a suitable Christmas present for my grandson, William, my wife suggested that I make something else in wood for his twin brother, Elliott. I cast around in my favourites on Lumberjocks and YouTube, and finally came up with The Wood Whisperer’s Contemporary Clock – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcYO9Ftkros&t=2s – as a suitable candidate.

I found an odd off-cut of some nicely figured dark wood (?) that would be suitable for the surround, and sliced up a piece of ash for the centre. The cross-sections had to be slightly less than Marc’s, but that mattered not, and I found a suitable watch on Ebay that would fit in a 50mm hole to be cut by a large Forstner bit that I had purchased for an earlier project. To match the ‘gold’ watch bezel, I dug out the last piece of brass tube that remained from the past construction of a Busker organ to use as the support for the centre instead of wooden dowel, and this presented the biggest problem of the project – getting the 8mm tube to fit tightly into 8mm holes. I got there eventually, but the centre can be tilted if necessary to suit a particular viewing angle.

Following Marc’s design, I cut slots for two different sizes of splines to strengthen the joints, making them from some 1/8 inch plywood sheets – sold on Ebay for use with laser engravers. I finished with three coats of Danish Oil, followed by buffing and the application of some Renaissance Wax. I think the project turned out quite well, but await the reaction of the two boys when they open their Christmas presents.

That came out real nice. I like the modern look of it.
