For several years the lathe’s in my schools woodshop hadn’t been use. I was curious on how to make things, so my teacher showed my class how to use the lathe. After the class I glued up some blackwalnut and began to make a bowl. I have also made about eight pens and pencils on the lathe, but they all grew legs and ran away

Are you saying this is your first turning? If so, I say “good for you”. This is a great first attempt.

Yes it is my first. And 2, 3,4 and 5 five have disappeared. People either took from the project storage at my school or borrowed them and never returned them

Then your work is popular! Nice job on that first one. Maybe invest in a padlock for your locker. Beautiful walnut.

Mike, my story was much like yours. The lathe in my H.S shop had not been used in quite a while so I asked my shop teacher (Mr. Cratin) to help me get started on a project. My first project was also a bowl. That was 49 years ago. So guess what? You have begun a life long hobby. Enjoy the ride!
