Project Information

This box measures about 12 long x 6 high and is made from red birch. After the box construction I started by cutting in the borders for the curved pattern on the face and ends with a V gouge. Then I did the the small scoop pattern within its frame. I went ahead and did all the scalloping on the main box and then tackled the design on the top.
The most difficult part was getting a consistent depth with the V gouge as it went through the changing depth on the curved face.
I chose to do a combination of paint and natural wood…the red birch is beautiful and I tried to highlight it with a contrasting color pattern. I painted the inside with a lighter green and finished everything with shellac and wax.
Taking photos isn't my strength and on this project with it's curved scalloped surfaces it proved difficult to get the raking light across the whole box to highlight the carving.

Thanks for looking.

Outside GREAT ! can't make up my mind about the inside color but the overall project is just dynamite
optical illusions abound - I see the curve on the side but Please tell us (ME) if the top has a curve on the running length or is just the side or do I need to see my optomologist ?

I was wondering if someone would see that wave on the top…its actually totally flat! The carving and frame gouging just make it look wavy…no need for the eye doctor!

Very nice work. I also think you too modest about your photography. Great post.

Thanks for posting, and congrats on the 3.

Tom, I like this box. You have gone to great lengths to give it eye appeal. There are wavy sides, textures, colors, and the surprise color inside. It is a very tasteful combination of techniques. The viewers eyes are drawn from one detail to another. Keep boxing and keep posting.

I have always thought that I have most certainly ran out of ideas whenever I work on storage boxes. However, the additional visual appeals you added to your artwork help pave a creative path for me to follow. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for all the comments! I've kinda got stuck on box making lately and still have a few more coming.
