Project Information
This box measures about 12 long x 6 high and is made from red birch. After the box construction I started by cutting in the borders for the curved pattern on the face and ends with a V gouge. Then I did the the small scoop pattern within its frame. I went ahead and did all the scalloping on the main box and then tackled the design on the top.
The most difficult part was getting a consistent depth with the V gouge as it went through the changing depth on the curved face.
I chose to do a combination of paint and natural wood…the red birch is beautiful and I tried to highlight it with a contrasting color pattern. I painted the inside with a lighter green and finished everything with shellac and wax.
Taking photos isn't my strength and on this project with it's curved scalloped surfaces it proved difficult to get the raking light across the whole box to highlight the carving.
Thanks for looking.
