Hello everyone, this is my first burl and I turned it own my homemade lathe(I wish I would have taken pictures of it before I decommissioned it). It was finished with several coats of polyurethane. I apologize for the size…I tried to resize it, but it actually made it smaller?

I’ve got a couple of Burls that I’ve been carrying around. One is White Oak it was probably 18” around and 10” thick. I’ve made cuttings for pens from it. I also have one that the sawmill owner called his turtle. It’s now mine and I call it that also. It has a head two hind legs out behind him and I big humpped back.

I’ve not done much turning except for pens, maybe someday.

Very nice.

I really like it Os. It has a lot of character. Any burl is cool, they are just the frosting on the cake. Yea I wish it was bigger too. Nice work, really nice. mike

Hi Mark;
—-great piece of swirling burls, now you’ve went and done it!

....burls, burls,
and watch those curls,
as the spinning of lathe often twirls,
and i stand before this wood shaping those swirls,
till i am lost in time of place to your breathtaking beautiful whorls….

Hope you don’t mind the rambling of my fingers reacting to this piece of wood art you have shared with us, thanks!!!
GODSPEED
Frank

Nice piece of burl Os. Looks like it was a fun piece to turn.

Nice burl! I’m always happy when I don’t orbit some chunk when I turn one.

a homemade lathe… another one of those “someday” projects. I do wish I had a nice place to turn outside – would allow me some quality time “in the shop”, while not sequestering myself to the basement on a nice summer day.

It was a bit scary to turn, but would have been harder to do if I wouldn’t have had my homemade lathe to do it on. I could turn it very slowly. Thanks for the nice comments.

Debbie, I am going to do a blog with pictures, soon as I can round up the parts that are left. I’m sorry that it is taking me so long.
