I first published some of these License Plate Pen / Pencil / Flower Arrangement Holders in January 2013.
Since then I have thrown away the Jig that I made to bend these and recently purchased a 30” Bending Brake from Harbor Freight (Item # 61791). It works so much easier and quicker.
The bases are made from 3/4” X 1 ½” stock that is miter cut to 3 ¾” lengths which can be decorated in different ways. The joints are rounded over using a 1/16” Round Over router bit. I have found that emphasizing the joints like that, hides small imperfections. I purchased some Corner Clamps (Harbor Freight Item #38661), and cut them apart to use on a Jig to easily clamp the bases together. The bases have 3/8” felt tabs on the bottom that rest inside indentations made with a 3/8” forstner bit. I even use old cedar fence posts cut to a 1 ” thickness. Two 3” white pine blocks are painted black, stack nailed to the base then the License Plates are attached to the blocks using #4, 1/2 inch screws. I use 2 stacked blocks because people complained that it was too deep for pens.
I went through all this set up and expense because I want to accurately bend, quickly build and mass produce an item for sale or gifting.
The License Plates have been given to me, or were purchased on Ebay for commemorating birthdays, or other occasions like the sale of a first car. In Texas you normally remove your plates from a car when it is sold.
Thank You for viewing this project.

Wrapped my car around a few lamp posts… but never a license around a pot plant (hmm?)!!!

Neat…
