Napkin Holder

One of my coworkers asked if I would make a napkin holder for her, so I thought it would be a good chance to use a piece of slightly figured maple I had on hand.

The outside edges are walnut, followed by thin strips of cherry, and finally I piece of curly maple for the center. I wasn’t sure if the mitered corners would hold up over the years, so I added four walnut miter keys to each side. The corners actually slant in about a degree to help hold the napkins in place.

For the finish, I started with several coats of heated BLO that I allowed to cure for several days. I then applied four coats of a homemade “danish oil”, followed by a couple coats of wax.

Overall I’m happy with it, and I’m sure she’s going to be very pleased.

Thanks for looking. Comments and feedback are always welcomed!

How coincidental that I was asked yesterday if I made and sold Napkin Holders, and here you are tempting me with such a good and easy design! Nice wood combination.

Particularly nice combination of woods. If you don’t mind being copied, I may make one just like it soon as I set my shop up again.

Nice simple design. Looks like a nice finish too.

Nice Design. I have been planning on replacing a napkins holder I made several years ago and am looking for designs. I like what you did. The splines add to the design. Thanks for sharing.

Excellent choice of wood for this project. Turns a simple, utility object into something beautiful. I’ve got to make one now.
