Pistol Range Box

When I was at the gun range I noticed everyone had a range box or a bag to carry their guns, ammo…

I looked online and found range boxes but they were all very simply, lacking storage area and $$$.

I also found that there was nowhere to sit and relax when not shooting at the range.

So I decided to build my own range box.

With no plans my design was a build in progress.

My requirements were:

1. Gun Storage and a mat to place my gun on the bench
2. Super strong earth magnets to hold my timer and extra clips while shooting
3. Storage for Ammo, accessories and a bite to eat and drink
4. Scope Mount
5. Place to sit and relax
6. Matched grain panels
7. A knobs that would go through the case into a brass threaded insert in the folding top to lock it in place to prevent wind or accidentally being bumped and falling closed
8. Pneumatic stops on the Accessory box so if the top closed it wouldn’t slam closed – (When I close the top it gently closes)
9. Wheels that would hold several hundred pounds for sitting and also offer a nice smooth ride on dirt roads or a field so my guns, ammo and accessories don’t get bounced around
10. Loaded I anticipated my weight to be approximately 15-35 pounds so ease of moving my range box and storage box from my vehicle to the range or house was a priority

3 months later I ended up with:

Tons of storage – a really nice cushy seat to sit back and relax on as well as everything you could ever want or need right next to you while shooting at your finger tips

When I rolled my Range Box up to the Pistol Club the first remark was “Whaaaat, really”. I did very much enjoy the attention after 3 months of hard work.

That is a great idea! I bet you invented a new item gun owners would like to have.

That is really cool. I’m sure you got many requests to make one just like it from other people at the range. Thanks for posting.

Nice work! I’m looking at making a box to take to the range, and have purchased a sheet of 1/2” Baltic Birch to make it from. Bonus material will be for other projects. My son bought a DeWalt plastic tool box before I told him I was going to make a chest. It bottoms out on pebbles! I have tires similar to your big ones that I plan to use. We’re going to lay out what we need to put in the box, and leave a little expansion space. I looked at the Gerstner range boxes; they are really nice, but $$$$ money. Can you mount your firearm to the box for support while cleaning? Might not be necessary for a pistol, but in looking at the Gerstner boxes, they provide a clamping setup for rifles. Having a seat besides the stool at the firing line is a nice feature. I’ll have to put that in the mix!

Very nice range box! Super Deluxe in every aspect and feature! What did your approximate loaded weight come up to? How about a blog and or some plans or dimensions? Where did you get your collapsible handle? Can all or the bottom be used for storage? Does the inner shelf lift up or is there an access door/drawer on the back side?

Thank you for your comments. The clamping idea for rifles is a great idea; I’m going to add this to my accessory box and add a pic when completed. I am asked to build Pistol Range Boxes like mine but the cost would be unrealistic but I will try to make plans for those who would like to build there own. The weight as is: MMMMM never weighed it. I’ll have to do that and I’ll post it. The collapsible handle handle is a dolly I custom fit to the bottom of the accessory box and there is no inner shelf that is the cushion you are looking at. Ill place more pics on a blog with better details.

Have your say...
