Awhile back a LJ posted some picks of a small exotic wood supplier in St. Pete FL which I never knew was there but I do now and I have to say Cocobolo is my new favorite wood because with every layer that is sanded or planed off it is a new discovery in color and wood grain and a trip through the jointer or planer is about it the wood requires minimal sanding. this is my first box made with the Cocobolo and it wont be my last, I have 2 coats of wax on it as of now I will add one more and buff it out to a nice sheen but that will be it I want the natural beauty to show.

Thank you for looking and please visit there site and give the owner a call my first trip which I think it was close to 2 hours but he has beauty in every corner and is willing to take the time with you if you can go in person or if you order over the net.

Nice lookin’ box. Is the handle cocobolo as well?

Cocobolo is nice for handles as well!
-I’ve used it for two knife handles.
as you use it more, be cautious, Cocobolo can irritate skin and lungs more so than many other woods.

Working with any type wood could be describe like that for any of us woodworkers. Some think woodworking should be banned do to our forrests becomming thinned out. All we can do is try to use and reuse wood when ever we can. From what I have witnessed on here, most people here try to be green. As this world becomes more poplulated there will be more and more issues like our oceans being over fished, our wildlife being pushed out or over hunted ect. As long as we careful and thougtful while working with exoctics it can be rewarding. My Favoraite wood is Purpleheart and a close 2nd is Padauk which I try and use 100% of what ever I buy.

Great looking project you made. Thx for the post!

Almost all the wood I use comes from yard trees that I saw myself. These logs would only end up in landfills or as firewood. However, wood is a renewable resource and we have new trees growing in the forest every day. When a tree reaches it’s full life, it dies and another takes it’s place. It’s cause of death could be fire, drought, insects, disease, or the activities of man. Everything that lives is going to die… We can either use this resource or let it rot. I can only hope the items I make from wood can be seen, used and appreciated for generations.

The only way to save any species is to make it more valuable. When it has value, it will be well taken care of. If no one has any use for something any longer, it won’t be conserved or protected.

Beautiful piece of timber. They say there are only two kinds of people in this world – those who are allergic to cocobolo and those who will be. Take precautions.
