My daughter is a knitter and spins her own yarn. I’m new to turning things on a lathe and she wanted to help suggest things for me to practice on. So she asked me to make her a Niddy Noddy. “A what”, I asked. What a strange name for a device that gathers up yarn. I like my name for it better. Since this is a woodworker’s forum maybe a better name would be Knitty Knotty, but not Niddy Noddy.

This one makes 48” skeins and is Maple with a Cherry accent stripe. The finish is William Ng’s recipe of equal parts BLO, tung oil and Poly.

Very nice work on that tool. I have never heard of one before. Now I learned something new early in the day!!
At first I thought the wood was ambrosia maple, but the stripe was too even!!
What are the dimensions? I think it is bigger than it looks

cheers, Jim

Thanks Jim,
The overall height is 11-3/4”, the wings span 10-7/8” the handle is 1.25” diameter at the grip. It looks a bit bulky because I wanted the grip to be comfortable for the user, but aesthetically it is too big for this small of a project.

Beautiful turning and construction. Like Jim, I never heard of of of these.

See you are from Lancaster, I’m just over in Chambersburg.

Thanks Lew. I’m really new to turning (I bought my first lathe 4 weeks ago), and really love it!
