My youngest son started to grow out of his toddler bed. I wanted to create a bed that would appeal to him and that would also provide a lot of closet space. I came up with this design that reverts back to the medieval box-bed.
First I drew the outline of the 4×4 car on paper. All “real” offroad vehicles have te wrong dimensions in that sence they are too long (or not high enough) to create a bed that is 2 meters long en still high enough to sit in, so I had to use my imagination. The complete design I made in SketchUp.
Near the headboard I created a little bookcase. Beacause the closet next to the bed is 90 cm deep, the bookcase doesn’t make that closet less practical.
The drawers under the bed are on wheels en can be pulled out entirely.
The frame is constructed of 18 mm hardwood ply, the fronts om 18 mm birch ply.
All panels were cut with a circular saw on a rail, the outline of the 4×4 car was made wih my router and various jigs. For the lifting doors I used hardware from a well-known flatpack furniture store.

Fantastic work there HoutenKlaas,

Very well thought out and equally impressive work I must say.
Some detail worth noting,
1. The yellow light with ears…love it!
2. The foot step in the drawer, thats a tick too! the shape of a clog would have really set it out!!
3. The unusual hinges on the tilt up doors. ...interesting concept there
4. Love the strap type handles too, and finally,
5. How about that wall paper …I found a couple of VW’s and a Willys jeep in there, ...alright!

All very good and interesting.
Now you have finished it you might wish to add a dog or a lion in your home page image or even your house for that matter, instead of the dull and boring default LJs image. ( sorry could not help myself)

Not forgetting also a very warm Welkom.

-- Regards Rob
