Plug Cutting Jig

Been doing a lot of Cabinet, Bookcase and Entertainment Center projects lately using Kreg joinery. That meant I was using a lot of plugs to fill the holes. I bought a box of plug and quickly found I used a lot and had to go back to Home Depot and buy more. This got me to thinking there had to be a less expensive way to plug these holes. YouTube to the rescue.

I found three basic ways to make inexpensive plugs. First was to use a dowel to plug the hole and a pull saw to cut them flush. Second was make a jig to cut my own plugs like the ones Kreg sells and third was to make a jig that cut dowels to size and again use a pull saw to cut them flush. All from 3/8” dowels.

I liked both the jig that cut Kreg like plugs and straight plugs so I combined them into a simple jig that allows me to make either on my Bandsaw. The jig is designed to cut two plugs from a 2” dowel with each pass.

The second function of the jig is to quickly cut the dowel into 2” lengths needed to make the Kreg like plugs. Just push the dowel into the 2” hole; run it through the bandsaw; and push it out with the remaining part of the dowel. Repeat the process until you have enough to make the plugs you need for the project.

The third is to make 1 1/2” plugs that need to be cut flush with a pull saw. Was not sure how much I would need to use it, but it was an easy addition to the jig if I needed it. Just push the dowel into the 1 1/2” hole; run it through the bandsaw; and push it out with the remaining part of the dowel. Repeat the process until you have enough to make the plugs you need for the project.

An advantage to the jig is maximum use of the dowel.

The jig lets me make plugs from any wood that matches or contrasts the main wood in my project, depending on the look, from any 3/8” dowel.

It is an easy to make jig that will save time and money.

Great jig for making your own dowel plugs. I agree, the price and limitation of wood species from Kreg make your jig indispensable for Kreg joinery.

I have saved this as a favourite for my own future use.

Well done
