The Wood Buddies have various family members who pride themselves on grilling. After a friend showed us a meat tong he made we obtained permission to copy and produce a series of these tongs for Christmas presents. By a series of cuts on one end of each tong side we were able to create a tong that would spring apart and not require a metal spring or just using your finger to keeps the tong legs apart.

We started with marine grade teak off-fall from previous projects. Each tong requires two sides. Each side is 3/8” T x 1” W x 12” L. We used the Rockler taper / straight line jig #21597 to create a taper on the outer portion of each tong side about 4-1/2” in length. The tip of the tapered tong side ended up being about 3/16” thick.

On the thick end of each tong leg two saw kerfs about 2” in length were cut creating three small but equal in width legs. Then one tong side had the outside legs removed at a 45 degree angle. The other tong side had the center leg removed also at a 45 degree angle. The 45 degree angles allow for clearance.

The sides were sanded then names and dates were engraved with our laser. The sides were mated and a hole was drilled for the 6-32 stainless steel hardware (McMaster-Carr.com). A thin style stainless steel locking nut insures the tong will not come apart.

Teak butcher block oil was applied. Each tong is wrapped in wax paper and placed in a 2” ID Kraft paper tube (Uline.com) with plastic capped ends. Eventually the tubes will be wrapped with holiday paper and placed under various family trees.

Kinda work like chopsticks then? My only concern is sticking any wood into fire, you tend to get more fire. A person would have to have the use of them down pat, or trying to learn how to use them they may get a touch charred.

Or maybe I just grill too hot?

Nice Christmas present, thanks for posting.

Every female in my family has at least two of those they use to pickup bacon with when they’re cooking it.
Nice work there Wuddox.
