Chip Carved Illusion

I first saw this chip carving design on, as a carving done by Emma Perlacky. The pattern on a 12” basswood plate with recessed center gives the illusion of bulging outward toward you. This carving is also unique in that it was not carved with a chip carving knife. Nearly all of the cuts were done with a #3-16mm fishtail gouge!

That center pops nicely! Interesting technique. I’ll have to try that on day.

Interesting effect Phil. Will a concave effect be next, or a wave? ;)
Looks like you are enjoying yourself, and that’s great.

Very nice. That’s a lot of work! Layout is the key. Well done.
Enjoyed your previous work and your projects.

Amazing effect Phil! And, as usual, beautifully done!
