This is a small box for the boss. All walnut with maple “plugs.” I used the mortiser set at an angle to make the diamond shapes. The large box used the 1/4” bit and the small tray box used the 1/8” bit. Came out ok I think. The ends are set in about 1/2” and are just simple butt joints. I did reinforce the joints with brass screws that I put in after drilling pilot holes and applying wax to the threads. The lid is just a slab lid rabbitted out to fit inside the lip of the box. The maple around the lid was an afterthought. I added it after I knocked out a hunk of the edge of the lid when I dropped it on the shop floor. Worked out ok. The inside tray is also but joints set in about 3/16” from the edge and it sits on two ledges on either side of the box. The bottom for both the box and the tray is 1/8” ply with stopped grooves put in by using the router table. The box and tray are both flocked with red velvet. Hope she likes it! Of course, I probably should have given it to her before she wrote my evaluation!

An interesting view on the plugs. I don’t know why we always want to align them up straight. I do like the diamonds.

Betsy,
Looks grea, the maple adds a pop to it as do the diamonds.

Nice and elegant save after the tumbling to the floor. I like the way you think. I like the diamonds, too!

Very nice, Betsy. I’m with everyone else on the diamonds. I also like the way you did the inside of the lid.

What’s the finish?

and the trim is gorgeous… I think the “drop” created a beautiful opportunity for you, which you fully took advantage of

Betsy if you don’t get a nice evaluation after giving her that box, then she is beyond help. Great looking box, oh, and I like the diamonds too.

Great box, and I’ll go along with the folks who say the diamonds really add to it. I also like the trim added to recover from an oops. Sometimes the best creativity comes by accident.

Simple but beautiful. I agree with Debbie… the drop was a fortunate accident!

Problem solving is a major appeal to woodworking for me. The maple “fix” addition to the lid was an excellent example of what I enjoy about the hobby. Nice mortised plugs as well.
