Ugly Stick

Great for walkin’ or whoopin’ if the necessity arises.

It is not as ugly as I thought it would be, but not as nice as it should be, either. Mostly because I hurried. My lathe work could have been quite a bit neater and crisper, but it doesn’t look too bad from a distance… or if you look in the distance in these photos instead of the details. :)

Walnut and hard maple. The handle was turned in two pieces. The shaft part of the handle has long tenons on each end epoxied into holes I drilled into the handle and shaft. It was a fun ‘do it in a day’ project that I am sure I will do again soon… only better.

I dont think it is ugly.
It is different and if you put a dozen different ones together.
It will be picked by someone who will treasure it.

You posted the wrong stick – I think the ugly one must still be behind you. This one looks great!

Not a bad “ugly stick”, especially for a first. I like the way you designed the shaft and how it tapers a bit going into the handle. You may want to try some non-lathe techniques for the handle, add a few more ergonomic curves that fit the hand nicely. Otherwise, a nice piece, especially with that view!

As far as a walking stick, I say it is first rate.

I am still woried about that whoopin. I probably deserve it, but you got to catch me first.

Well, my strategy worked… y’all looked at the view instead of studying the cane! :)
Thank you for your kind comments.

I guess the colorful phrase, “Whooped with an ugly stick” is not as common as I thought.qq
