This is a Madrone burl bowl that I turned a couple of weeks ago. I got this wood from Greg at Oregon Burls. If you haven’t checked into any of his wood yet, you need to. He has a website “oregonburls.com” or check him out on ebay. This blank was still pretty wet, but with some very helpful insight from Greg, working it was a breeze. I knew this piece was going to “move” quite a bit and am cool with it. I am wondering what those lighter colored lines on the side of it in the first picture are called? Are they “medullary rays”? They gave the bowl some texture while it was drying out, kinda like little ridges. This bowl is 7 1/4” in diameter and 4 1/4” tall. Right now, the only finish that is on it is a few coats of boiled linseed oil. Thanks for looking, and all critiques and info are always welcome.

Thanks for the kind words. That looks like a nice one. Just keep watching it if see if it starts to crack. You can soak it in the linseed oil and even that will help it move less or boil it as is and that will work out nicely also. Nice color!

Zeke, that is a nice bowl. I have not worked with Madrone Burl because of the issues you discuss. You did a good job. It does look like you had some more sanding to do on the inside, or is the line I see a design feature.! Sanding wet wood is not easy. Could you have left a way to remount it after it is dry to finish sanding? Overall, that looks great. Greg, will boiling change that nice color?

Robert, you are correct. That is some poor sanding. I don’t have a chuck to be able to remount it. I use the ole waste block, brown paper and CA glue method of attaching it to my face plate. I hope to have an adjustable jaw chuck sometime soon. I will have to sand it by hand at this point, ughh, haha. Does anyone know if those are “medullary rays” or what they might be called? Thanks for the feedback fellas.

Thanks,

Zeke
