This is one of the earlier pieces that I made. I think that I did an OK job on it for the experience that I had when I made it, but I know where the flaws are on it, and I tend to always look at them instead of the parts that came out well.
I used white oak for the legs, aprons, and the “frame” around the center of the top. The rectangular center of the top is 1/4 sawn white oak. The shelf on the bottom is oak plywood. The square pegs are rosewood.
The top has breadboard ends, which was my first time cutting and fitting those. The slats were my first effort at forming any type of curve on a piece. I did my best on the slats, but as I only had my dad’s hand-held belt sander, the results weren’t perfect.
The stain is Varathane Missiion Oak, I think two coats. The top coat is three coats of Minwax wiping varnish. The top is finished a little differently. I filled the pores (first time doing that), used the Mission Oak, and topcoated with three coats of gloss varnish. When the varnish was dry, I buffed it out with turtle wax rubbing compound. To top it all off I rubbed on a coat of wax.

I like it. The Rosewood pages look great against the Oak.
We all think the ‘flaws’ are glaring, nobody ever notices them but us though ;)

Good looking table. Quit looking at the flaws and enjoy the beauty of your work – almost every project has a flaw in it somewhere.

Looks good. My wife told me several times before I got it: don’t point out the flaws, and unless they are really bad no one will notice.

There are two things to remember about mistakes:
1. If they’re small, nobody will notice.
2. If they’re big, it was supposed to be that way.

Hiber, that’s what I’m saying! Bow? Oh, that’s not a bow..it’s a lamination. Nice table R O C K. You should see the little mishaps I can produce. They’re what makes it yours.

I don’t know how I missed this when you originally posted it but I am glad it came back around on my list. I am a fan of mission style furniture and you did a good job on this table. The slats look just fine to me. There may some a slight difference between them but it is not enough to notice unless you call attention. Besides this give them a hand crafted look which is consistent with the mission look. The rosewood pegs add a nice detail to the piece as well.
Nice post and I enjoyed sharing it.
