This is an oak and paint grade staircase I crafted in March. As you can see in the photos it starts out 42” wide and then has to shrink on the last 3 treads to 36” wide. I have no finished photos because a painter was brought in to detail by the customer. I can tell you nothing is more stressful than carrying in a custom staircase that has to fit perfectly inside of an opening like this while the customer is standing over your shoulder hehe. Fortunately it was a perfect fit with about a 1/16” of room to spare.
The over sized first step was custom made including its riser. You’ll probably summarize how I did it based on the photos :P Every step after the finish floors are installed will be identical in riser height (which is code but you can’t imagine how many people don’t worry about this). All told this took about 10 days between creating and installation.

Nice job! I am currently working on my first oak staircase. Right now I’m making the stair tread with returns. What a job it is!
