Hall Table

When it comes to furniture, I usually decide what piece to build and then I look for lumber to build it. This piece is different. I did not intend on building it and worse, I did not get approval (from the significant other) to build it. I came across some interesting oak boards that had black streaks in them (somewhat unusual for oak). I found two boards with this characteristic on one of the sides. I figured out that I can take one of the boards and fold it so that the dark patterns are in the middle and form the top. The second piece I could use to form the aprons and drawer fronts. The piece in the pictures is what resulted out of this effort. The drawers are dovetailed by hand, the entire piece is oiled and the top has shellac on top of the oil. I think it is a perfect hall table (only 12” wide) but my wife thinks is unnecessary. After long discussions we agreed not to talk about it.

The piece is in the same style as the other living room furniture and, in my opinion, it goes well with the rest of the furniture in the room. One of these days I’ll summon the courage to design and build the big entertainment center to completely enclose the TV (my wife commissioned this and every time I do a woodturning she asks me why I’m not working on the entertainment center).

Nicely done. I like the oak.

You’d better make that entertainment center! ;)

Sweet.
Sometiimes a guy’s got to do what a guy’s got to do.
(P.S. I’ll take it if you can’t keep it.)

Very nice table. And, if it makes you feel any better, I’ve had those type of discussions with my wife as well.

Jeez that’s nice. Did you make the bandsaw box too? I’d like to hear about that, too.

rikkor, you can find the bandsaw box project here: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/2895

Blake, miles125, SPalm adn Russel: thanks for your comments.

Blake: I finally started to play with sketchup and I seem to be proficient enough already to start designing. The big problem is that the list of requirements is a mile long and I have some really hard problems to solve. The major difficulty is that the TV and all the electronics have to be completely enclosed so that “none of the ugly electronic stuff is visible” (my wife’s requirement).

Very pretty table, Alin. And, those dovetails look great. Someday your wife will agree with you about it being a perfect hall table. In the meantime, get to work on that entertainment center! :^D
