Mahogany box

This is a Mahogany Box with a turned air dried walnut handle and finished with Shellac. The box was made to fit a specific item, hence the foam insert. I basically made the box around that foam insert so that it would fit snuggly. Under the foam insert is a not so secret stash compartment for accessories for the item in the box. The finger pull tray is made out of a piece of 1/8 inch red oak plywood that I had at home.

It is more or less a bandsawn box, there are only glue joints and the corners are not mitered…next time they will be…The lid was then carved out with bench chisels to fit on top of the foam insert. I planned on putting some rare earth magnets in the lid to secure it more tightly but its a pretty good fit as it is, so I haven’t done it yet.
Thanks for looking!

Mahogany never looked so elegant with that shaped handle giving it that Asian flair, nice box. Nicer still that you made it to house something important to you.

Thanks for posting.

No, Thank you for looking and leaving your kind words…I know its simple and not exactly “fine woodworking” but I really enjoyed working with mahogany for this project, and I definitely looked for inspiration from another woodworker and Fine Woodworking Magazine employee (who also leans towards the asian side of design) you were spot on with that!
Thanks again!

Thank you both, The handle was challenging…I thought long and hard and made about 3 other failed attempts at different designs before I settled on this design.
