These are some mini-bowls that I’ve been working on the past month using scrap wood from my shop. The first two are made from mahoghany and the last one is from southern pine. I roughed out the bowls with Foredom and Dremel grinders and do the detail work with X-Acto knives and carving gouges. The finish is brown shoe polish with multiple coats of paste wax. As these bowls are to be used for decoration they weren’t finished with food-safe finishes. These bowls were challenging due to their size and more time is spent with sanding then with carving. I didn’t use any particular patterns rather letting the wood create the carved design!

Wow! I bet there’s no such thing as a scrap in your shop. Nice work.

Dave, those are great, and the handwork so easily differentiated from lathe work. Your carving pattern on the round mahogany one is well-spaced and evenly cut. The little oval looks like a seed pod, and the pine like a pastry shell. Really really neat. You can tell, I like them.

I have to agree with Hairy. Pieces that small end up in my fireplace.

Thanks for the nice comments, it makes the time put into them all the more worthwhile. I’ve gotten out of doing major woodworking projects (furniture, etc.) the past couple of years and have moved into wood carving and smaller projects.

Dave, I really like that first one. Nice job with the scraps.
