birch log band saw box

This is a band saw box I made from this little birch log that I was given by a guy in the U.P. I thought “what can I do with it?” While waiting for glue and finish to dry on other projects, I cut it out leaving the opening clear on the bottom. Then I decided to mount a magnet in back and glue a steel disc in the back of the drawer to lock it in. So I had to make a way to open it and I cut an oval groove in the bottom and put a little handle hole in the bottom of the drawer.
I flocked the drawer with the black fibers I bought for another project and thought I’d share what I used to apply the fibers. Rather than using that cardboard tube that takes 2 hands, I took a 2 litre bottle and drilled a bunch of 1/8” holes in the top so I could squeeze it with one hand and rotate the drawer all around with my other hand to distribute the fibers to all the corners. It worked out pretty well.

I do have one concern using a birch log with bark on it. As it drys out, the bark tends to separate from the wood. I may have to strip off the bark and sand it all down in the future?????

Sweet little secret box.
This must be for cany at christamas for the grand children.
Then they have to solve the opening to get a candy…

What a great idea on that box you must have a fine bandsaw.
If you seal the bark real good you should be ok.

Beautiful box

For your question : “I may have to strip off the bark and sand it all down in the future?????”

The response is : YES
The bark is like a papyrus
Have a nice day

Hi Diggerjack. If that happens I’ll post it again barkless!

triple thick krylon will hold the bark in place. two or three heavy coats.

Well done, good use of the magnet – using magnets with bandsawn boxes opens up a whole new adventure!
