Finished up with this ‘stump’ carving. My client said he wanted an eagle with the body facing his house and the head facing North. I asked him if i could do my own add-ons as long as I made the eagle he wanted. This is how it turned out. I added a flying eagle below the one he wanted, and then added a nest above it…I made it look like the nest was being held in a hand and when I added the babies on a whim, the scene was complete. The stump was about 24”in diameter and about 9’ tall. Best I could tell, the wood was oak. Its the only piece I’ve ever made in Champaign besides my very first (the first) chess set back in 1997. Looking to do something special and different in an equine theme for a friend of mine from high school, and then. Sorry for the bad pic, sun was brutal yesterday so bright it washed out much of the head and eye detail… No patterns or pics or drawings were used, completely free-handed from top to bottom…next time I’ll have my patterns established, lol, but it sure was fun just to wing it…from my mind’s eye directly to the dime tip bar…

Nice work! Definitely different than a chess set!
